Red Cabbage & Escolar

so i've decided i need to eat more red cabbage... i figured it probably has some great nutritional value so i googled it and sure enough its a good source of dietary fiber and has a ton of vitamin C. fab! so last night i made a slaw with red cabbage, thinly sliced red pepper and some chopped up cucumber with a really simple dressing of rice wine vinegar, a little sake, brown sugar and some oil. good times and i'm thinking the leftovers will be even better. i'll be topping it with some toasted slivered almonds and green onion.

writing about all of this got me thinking about getting a lovely piece of fish on my way home to accompany my red cabbage leftovers which got me thinking about escolar... a fish they had at mollie stones a while back. i tried it and it was super tasty... but how come i'd never heard of it before? what is it? is it endangered? well a little internet research later i found out the bad news about escolar... it can give you diarrhea. WHAT?!? yep, its true... apparently due to its "high levels of non-saponifiable lipids and high wax ester content" it can cause an abdominal nightmare (similar i think to the olestra found in WOW chips). oh, and incase you are curious... escolar is sometimes hiding out on sushi menus as "fatty white tuna" - sashimi lovers beware! anywho, i'm pretty much kind of grossed out on escolar now even though i'm sure its fine as long as you aren't eating it in mass quantities and i mean... they sell it at mollie stones so it can't be all that bad?

this mean fish makes you poo

What do you mean you've never heard of ESCOLAR? I mean, Rachael Ray cooks with it all the time! Don't pretend like you don't watch 30 minute meals...Do you think R. Ray has digestive issues? Is that why she hurries through her show? So she can go to the bathroom?
